What is the LPrD?
The LPrD is the Vaud cantonal data protection law. It governs how Vaud public bodies, including the cantonal administration, municipalities, public institutions, and entities carrying out a public task, process personal data. Private companies are not subject to it: they fall under the federal law (LPD).
Adopted to protect individuals from misuse of their data by public authorities, the LPrD governs the collection, storage, sharing, and destruction of personal data by the cantonal public sector. A revision was put out for consultation by the Council of State on 5 March 2026 to align Vaud law with the new federal law and introduce strengthened obligations.
